About Writing For The Undercurrent
The Undercurrent strives to provide opportunities for both aspiring and experienced writers. Our goal is to ensure that the pieces we publish go on to gain broad exposure and make an impact on the intellectual debate on colleges campuses. For new writers (and particularly student writers), our goal is to offer editorial feedback in a nurturing climate where communication skills can be honed.
We publish three distinct types of content. The easiest way to get involved is to participate in our Campus Media Response (CMR) program. Here we find articles published on the websites of campus newspapers and respond with a unique Objectivist viewpoint and a link to more information. If you have more to say, you can write an article for our blog. Experienced writers are then offered the opportunity to produce print issue articles that reach an audience of tens of thousands of readers in the US, Canada, and the UK.
If you would like to participate in the CMR program, details are below. For those interested in writing a blog post, it is best to begin by submitting an outline, including subject and theme, to editors@the-undercurrent.com. One of our editors will get back to you with feedback. If you have already written an article which you wish to post on the blog, we are happy to receive those as well, though it is our policy to refrain from publishing articles that have already been published elsewhere.
As a reminder, print issue articles are mostly for experienced writers at TU, and we encourage writers to start with the blog or CMR. Most issues have a guiding theme, and once announced, writers begin on an article which fits that theme. Outlines, including theme and subject, are sent to the editors who then clear an article for writing. Once in print, the article is distributed to colleges in the countries mentioned previously.
If you’re interested in writing for us, we encourage you to follow these guidelines and hope to hear from you soon.

Campus Media Response
Do you ever read your campus newspaper and want to express your disagreement with articles that attack capitalism or individualism, or uphold multiculturalism, environmentalism or religion? Do you want to promote Objectivist principles as alternatives to conventional opinion on campus–and on a national stage?
Participating in CMR is simple and time-saving way to get your online activism fix. Here’s how you can help us spread rational ideas:
- REVIEW the comments the CMR team has already written on campus media, to get a sense of what we’re looking for:http://the-undercurrent.com/cmr/
- READ opinion pieces in your local campus paper that deserve commentary, OR BROWSE our blog listing recent opinion pieces with suggestions for brief responses: http://www.google.com/reader/shared/undercurrent.cmr
- SELECT a topic and WRITE a one-paragraph response (it can be challenging, but aim to focus on a single point). Think about your CMR post as you would a letter to the editor. SUBMIT it to our editors: cmr [at] the-undercurrent [dot] com
- If we accept your response, we’ll POST it on our blog, the original article’s comment section, and SEND it to the paper as a letter to the editor.
Even if your piece isn’t accepted as a letter to the editor, you’ll still get the satisfaction of knowing that the world can see your commentary on both the paper’s comment section, and in an even more prominent position on The Undercurrent’s blog.
